My high school season football record was 9-1-1. I was recruited by the University IOWA, Michigan State, Ohio State and Purdue University. I chose to attend Purdue University in 1961. The end of high school football season, I won ALL OHIO HONORS. I became the 3rd best end in the state of OHIO.

Hello to Charlie King, Veodis Byrd, Tony King, Glenn Hill, Marion Young, Ricky Taylor and Mel Knowlton (Great Alliance High School Football Coach R.I.P). "Maple Beach Forever"

I excelled in high school basketball. I won Most Valuable Player Award in my senior year. I also won first team ALL-STARK COUNTY HONORS. I scored 19 points and pulled in 32 rebounds in a single game. A high school rebounding record which still stands today. The newspaper article stated that Elgin Baylor and Jerry West would have been proud to have had that type of statistics.

PURDUE UNIVERSITY

West Lafayette, Indiana (1961-1965) Right Tight End

I attended Purdue, University August 1961. I was a promising freshmen right tight end. My sophmore year I had enough stats to become an ALL AMERICAN end. The introduction of a wide receiver to football happened in late 1950's early 1960's by Army Academy, University of Southern California. By moving the tight ends away from the tackle position. This became the Lonesome End - Wide Receiver Position. The allowed the wide receiver to come off the line of schrimage freely. This allowed football games to be more exciting and open with passing. I excelled during this transition to wide receiver. The AMERICAN FOOTBALL CONFERENCE utilized this in the majority of the formations. At the end of my senior year at Purdue, University I was recruited by the Dallas Coybows, Philiadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns and the Kansas City Chiefs Football Club. I chose to report to the Kansas City Chiefs training camp August, 1965.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL CONFERENCE (AFC) VS NATIONAL FOOTBALL CONFERENCE
Championship game played at the Los Angeles Colosseum. This became the first SUPER BOWL TEAMS.
The American League Team, the Dallas Texans were purchased by the Lamar Hunt and moved the team to Kansas City, Missouri in 1960. This became the birth of the Kansas City Chiefs Football Club. I joined the Chiefs July 15, 1965 as a free agent wide receiver from Purdue University. I was given the football jersey number 15 and was told to play defensive half back. I tried this position but it was not for me. The coaches observed me in practice running outstanding pass routes and catching passes very well. I was quickly returned to the wide receiver position and given number 48. At one time the wide receiver positions were - right side, Otis Taylor, Sam Longmire and Nolan Smith. The left side wide receivers were Frank Pitts (Riddler) and Gloster Richardson. The quarter back Len Dawson and I are from the same home town and high school in Alliance, Ohio. Len and I also attended Purdue University. He was the Quarter Back for the Kansas City Chiefs when I joined them as a rookie in 1965. Len is eight years my senior.
The AMERICAN FOOTBALL CONFERENCE team the Kansas City Chiefs and the NATIONAL FOOTBALL CONFERENCE TEAM team the Green Bay Packers played a championship game at the Los Angeles Colosseum. The owners of the teams were admiring the spectacular half time show of this game. One of the owners said "What a Super Half Time Show". The other owner said lets call this championship game The Super Bowl!!! Hence the birth of the Super Bowl. The Green Bay Packers went on to win this game 35 to 10. I was released of my contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in August 1968. Playing professional football was one of the highlites of my life and being a part of the history by being part of the first Super Bowl Team.
